Malta and Atlantis

Mysticism or Magic

You must have heard of Atlantis (Ancient Greek: Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος, "island of Atlas") - an island renowned for its Ancient , and .

Personally, I’ve heard about it while exploring The Secret Doctrine written by the Russian mystic Blavatsky, the founded of Theosophical Society in the 1870s. She claimed that this text was dictated for the first time in Atlantis. She believed that the Atlanteans were cultural and leaders of Gaia, but due to the mis-use of their psychic and supernatural powers, they developed a lethal weapon that has destroyed the island.

Plato's Atlantis

Within the works of scientists, Atlantis was first time mentioned within two Plato's works: Timaeus and Critias, where it represents the naval power that at one point besieges Ancient Athens, and it is mentioned as the embodiment of Plato's ideal state in The Republic. Plato’s story concludes with Atlantis falling out of favor with Gods and submerging into the Ocean.

Thomas More's Utopia was also based on this Plato’s story of Atlantis. Plato's mentions the time of the events - some 9,000 years before his time and the location of Atlantis as being "beyond the Pillars of Hercules".

Atlantis and its Magic

Atlantis became a synonym of an advanced prehistoric lost civilization

The Plato’s dialogues quote Solon’s manuscript Atlantikos. Solon was an influential Athenian statesman and law-maker who lived from 638 to 558 BC and who visited Egypt around 590 BC. He translated one of the manuscripts - an Egyptian records of Atlantis written in 360 BC:

“Now in this island of Atlantis there existed a confederation of kings, of great and marvelous power, which held sway over all the island, and over many other islands also and parts of the continent.”

Within the Timaeus, the second Plato’s work, he also mentions Atlantis, within the recollection of the beginnings of the known universe and ancient civilizations. When Socrates asks about an example of the perfect society, as described in Plato's Republic (c. 380 BC) Critias mentions a tale he considered to be historical, that describes Atlantis.

According to Critias, the Hellenic deities divided the land so that each deity might have their own lot; Poseidon was given the island of Atlantis. The island was large but it was later sunk by an earthquake and became an impassable mud shoal, inhibiting travel to any part of the ocean.

According to the myth narrated by Plato, Poseidon fell in love with Cleito, who bore him 10 boys. The eldest, Atlas, was made the king of the island. The Atlanteans carved tunnels into the rock so that ships could pass into the city around the mountain.

The philosopher Crantor, a student of Plato's student Xenocrates, is cited as an example of a writer who thought the story to be historical fact.

Location of Atlantis

Most of the historically proposed locations are in or near the Mediterranean Sea. The Thera eruption, dated to the seventeenth or sixteenth century BC, caused a large tsunami that devastated the civilization on the islands.

Was Malta the island of Atlantis?

Malta as Atlantis Theory

The renowned Maltese architect who designed the Mosta Rotunda Giorgio Grongnet de Vassé, in 1854, was the first one to publish a short compendium detailing his theory that Malta was the location of Atlantis This theory was brought to the fore again by Maltese authors Anton Mifsud (Echoes of Plato Island), Frances Galea (Malta Fdal Atlantis) and Francis Aloisio in his Novels. Some of the arguments discussed within their papers, researches and books are:

1. Malta has the oldest free standing temples on Earth

I am familiar with 30 of them while some mention the number of 64 or so built on these islands. These ancient megalithic structures that are around 8-10,000 years old are the oldest free-standing temples and they predate the Great Pyramids of Egypt by a thousand years. Some stone blocks within the temples weigh more than 20 tons, and there are temples perfectly aligned with the rising of the sun, while others are aligned with stars constellations barely visible to the naked eye.

2. Malta's Location in Mediterranean

When Plato visited the temple of Neith at Sais, in Egypt, he saw the story of Atlantika engraved on the temple columns and he located the Atlantis to be in the western ocean (what is now referred to as the Mediterranean Sea). Greeks were not a seafaring people, so if they ventured to fight their enemy, if there was any sort of conflict between them, they ought to have been relatively close to Greece;

3. Ancient Cart Ruts built all over the Maltese Islands

could have only be built by a technologically advanced culture at the cradle of civilization. One of the stone field, known as a Clapham Junction, or Misrah Ghar il-Kbir, is a limestone field crosshatched with stone cart ruts. They must have been the large grid of irrigation canals that Plato wrote about. Observing the Cart Tuts, there is evidence that a catastrophe struck the islands long ago, leaving some of the Maltese islands under water;

4. Malta Underwater Temples

An underwater site referred to as “Ġebel ġol-Baħar” is a possible megalithic temple located in St. Julian’s. The site was identified in 1999 and it could be an ancient temple that was sunk by the catastrophe.

Whether or not Malta is Atlantis, my personal experience of this magical island and its ancient sites and its underground temple Hypogeum is very special. I was privileged to meditate at the ancient temples’ sites during the full moon nights, to descend spiral steps of Hypogeum we conducted during the 10 days Megalitics Conference in 2008 where archeologists met various scientists and meditators to perform many spiritual researches sharing experiences, experiments while dousing, dancing, sound healing, walking the labyrinths, chanting and meditating.
